A Missionary and Catechetical Trip to Khakassia, Buryatia, and Irkutsk.

Fr. Vsevolod Lytkin, pastor of the Lutheran parish in Novosibirsk and director of the West Siberian Christian Mission, undertook an extensive missionary and catechetical trip to such places as Tuim, Republic of Khakassia; Petropavlovka, Republic of Buryatia; and the city of Irkutsk. This trip lasted for ten days and was quite eventful.

Fr. Pavel Zayakin, deacon and missionary of the congregation in the town of Tuim in Khakassia, assisted Fr. Vsevold Lytkin in Buryatia and Irkutsk. The seminar in Buryatia was the major event of the trip. For three days Lutheran ministers taught Lutheran doctrine to about 40 people in Petropavlovka.

Pastor Lytkon taught the Small Catechism, and Deacon Zaykian taught Biblical Hermeneutics. These themes made a significant impact on seminar participants. The seminars served both church members and new people coming into the church. For church members the purpose was to enhance their competence in matters of faith. For the new people these seminars also served catechetical purposes, providing necessary instruction before baptism or confirmation.

Fr. Lytkin and Fr. Zayakin conducted services and preached sermons throughout the trip. LTS organist Natalia Sheludyakova also participated in the trip. She offered some instruction in music to the local organists. One of the highlights of the trips was the distribution of printed hymnals, published at Lutheran Theological Seminary. Natalia worked on the hymns during the past year. The hymnals do not represent an exhaustive collection, nor do they appear to be a fully finished product, but they are much better than what the congregations had before. People in all places were exceedingly joyful to receive such a gift. About 10 copies were distributed at the each place. Hopefully, more copies will be prepared by LTS for the missions in the future.
